Medation & Informal Settlement Negotiations

Is settlement possible?

Not every family law case needs to go to trial—and in fact, most don’t. Mediation is a structured negotiation process where both sides meet (often with their attorneys) and work with a neutral third-party mediator to resolve issues like custody, support, and property division outside the courtroom.

At The Turner Firm, we approach mediation the same way we approach trial: with preparation, strategy, and a clear understanding of our client’s goals. Most Texas family courts now require mediation before a final hearing or trial can be scheduled. It’s often a faster, more cost-effective path to resolution—and when handled correctly, it can give you more control over the outcome than leaving your future in the hands of a judge.

That said, mediation isn’t always appropriate—and an experienced attorney knows when to push back. In cases involving family violence, extreme power imbalance, or when one party is acting in bad faith, we may be able to request that the court waive the mediation requirement. We don’t say “yes” to mediation just to check a box. We say yes when it makes sense—and we say no when it doesn’t.

We are always open to reasonable agreements. When both sides are willing to engage in good faith, we work hard to craft clear, enforceable settlements that protect your interests and reduce unnecessary stress and expense. But we don’t settle just to avoid conflict. We settle when the terms are fair, and when doing so serves your long-term future.

Whether you’re preparing for mediation or hoping to avoid unnecessary conflict altogether, The Turner Firm brings steady guidance, tough negotiation, and focused advocacy to every case.
